Facebook's Zuckerberg to meet European Parliament over privacy

On Wednesday, EU Parliament President Antonio Tajani confirmed that Zuckerberg "will be in Brussels as soon as possible, hopefully already next week" and would meet with parliamentary leaders and an expert on civil liberties and justice.

THE US Justice Department and the FBI are investigating Cambridge Analytica (CA), the British marketing analytics firm embroiled in the Facebook data scandal, and have questioned potential witnesses, The New York Times reported on Tuesday. Zuckerberg is not expected to attend those, a European Parliament spokesperson said.

"We have accepted the Council of President's proposal to meet with leaders of the European Parliament and appreciate the opportunity for dialogue, to listen to their views and show the steps we are taking to better protect people's privacy", a spokesman for Facebook said in Washington.

Damian Collins, the head of the United Kingdom parliament's media committee, has said he hopes Zuckerberg would take advantage of his trip to Europe next week to visit London and testify there as well.

CA has vehemently denied exploiting data obtained from up to 87 million Facebook users for Donald Trump's presidential campaign, claiming it deleted data obtained in breach of the social network's terms of service. Zuckerberg testified before the US House of Representatives and the Senate in April.

Around 2.7 million of these users were European residents, according to the European Commission.

The European Union's new General Data Protection Regulation will be enforced from May 25.

Zuckerberg's visit next week comes as an aggressive new European data protection law comes into effect that will give Facebook's millions of European users more control over what companies can do with what they post, search and click.

The British parliament also requested that Zuckerberg answer questions from lawmakers but the firm's chief technology officer attended that hearing instead.

Rebecca Stimson, the head of policy for Facebook UK, told the committee in a letter on Monday that Zuckerberg "has no plans to meet with the committee or travel to the UK at the present time".
