Militant shot dead in attack on police headquarters in Indonesia's Riau province

The perpetrators in the sword attack on the police headquarters of Indonesia's Riau province on Wednesday have links with the Islamic State (IS), a police officer said.

In addition to the two injured cops, one police officer killed after getting hit by suspected terrorists' vehicle, one journalist injured, four perpetrators killed while at least one is on the run.

Local police initially said they had killed three people and wounded another.

"Four have been shot to death and one fled", said spokesman Setyo Wasisto.

The attacks have put Indonesia on edge as the world's biggest Muslim majority country starts the holy fasting month of Ramadan from Thursday.

Police have been frequent targets of mostly low level attacks by local militants, including a 2017 suicide bombing at a bus station in Jakarta that killed three police officers.

The men had driven their auto into the police yard before getting out to stage the attack, Setyo Wasisto, national police spokesman, told a briefing.

Most attacks in recent years have been limited to low-level operations against domestic security forces.

According to reports from journalists at the scene, who were covering another story right before the attack, a white Toyota Avanza smashed into the outer fence of the police headquarters.

A suicide bombing was also reported at the city's police headquarters on Monday when bike-borne attackers blew themselves up at the checkpoint to the precinct.

The church bombing family were in the same religious study group as the two other families linked to the attacks, police said.

The church and earlier police station attacks were likely motivated by the arrest of JAD leaders, authorities said.
