Terror is a family affair for ISIS-linked militant groups in Indonesia

A statement given by Frans Barung Mangera, another police rep offered assurances about the 8-year-old girl's chances of survival.

Picture: The reflection of a church struck by suicide bombers is seen in Surabaya, Indonesia, on 14th May. Police chief Tito Karnavian revealed that the father led the attack using a vehicle bomb in one of the churches, while his sons, aged 18 and 16, rode their motorcycles in another church.

According to police, Oepriarto was friends with the family that carried out Monday's police headquarters bombing and a third family, three members of which died when homemade bombs exploded in their apartment on Sunday night.

However, the return of Indonesian fighters and their families from ISIS-controlled areas of Iraq and Syria presented a new challenge to the country's law enforcement and intelligence agencies.

At least four children belonging to two of the three families behind the string of bombings in Surabaya and Sidoarjo, East Java, on Sunday and Monday, became orphans after their parents were killed in the explosions.

Twenty-five people have died since Sunday, including 13 militants and their children.

Another family reportedly attacked a police station this morning, wounding 10 people including police officers. Jemaah Islamiyah, the al-Qaida affiliated network responsible for the Bali attacks, was obliterated by a sustained crackdown on militants by Indonesia's counterterrorism police with US and Australian support.

The father of the family that killed the Christians on Mother's Day, Dita Futrianto, was the suspected head of the local cell of an Islamic State-inspired network called Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), the BBC reported, citing police. Its leaders were killed in police raids and hundreds of militants were arrested. An eight-year-old daughter survived.

The new spate of bombings comes just ahead of the holy Islamic month of Ramadan, and follows a melee at a detention center near Jakarta last week in which jailed Muslim extremists killed six officers.

Yesterday, a counter-terrorism source told The Straits Times that a key reason why male militants are willing to sacrifice their wives and children in their "martyrdom" was because they did not want their surviving spouse and children being placed in deradilcalisation programmes after their death. Using two motorbikes, they drove into the carpark where they detonated their waist bombs.
