World number seven Thiem broke in a hard-fought opening game and spent much of the first set on the offensive, nearly breaking again at 3-1 when Anderson just edged a lengthy rally. Sharapova also lost in three sets to Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands while Halep, the champion in 2016 and 2017, was blown away by Karolina Pliskova.
