Mohamed Salah has added another award to his collection after being named the Football Writers' Association Player of the Year.

The Egypt star has only missed four matches in all competitions in 2017-18 and played the full 90 minutes of the 4-2 Champions League semi-final second-leg defeat to Roma, a result which saw Liverpool progress 7-6 on aggregate.

Egypt qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 28 years and their chances in Group A against hosts Russia, Saudi Arabia and Uruguay rest largely on the 25-year-old Salah's shoulders.

"It's been the tightest call since 1968/69, when there was a dead heat between Tony Book of Manchester City and Derby's Dave Mackay", FWA chief Patrick Barclay said.

Liverpool left-back Alberto Moreno says teammate Mohamed Salah only trains at 20 percent of his capacity for "fear of getting injured".

Should he do that, then Salah will surely be in the running for the ultimate prize, the Ballon d'Or, at the end of the year.

But one journalist's question raised some eyebrows.

Mo Salah and Cristiano Ronaldo are being banded around as the only two possible picks for this year's Ballon d'Or due to their exploits in Europe and the sheer amount of goals they've scored.
