Facebook fires engineer for misusing data access privileges and stalking women

On Sunday, cybersecurity consultant Jackie Stokes tweeted out a Tinder conversation that appeared to show a Facebook employee bragging about their ability to obtain data on users.

Citing former employees, the report stated that several employees have been fired for mishandling users' personal information.

"I have to say that you are hard to find", the user added, "lol".

Facebook then told the BBC: "Although we can't comment on any individual personnel matters, we are aware of the situation and investigating".

In the unverified screenshot, the employee in question writes of being a "professional stalker" searching for hackers.

The claim surfaced in a tweet Sunday by Jackie Stokes, a cybersecurity consultant, who alleged she received copies of a text conversation on the dating app Tinder that showed "a security engineer now employed at Facebook is likely using privileged access to stalk women online". "We have a zero-tolerance approach to abuse, and improper behavior results in termination", the company said in a statement. As of December 2017, Facebook employed 25,105 people.

As reported by Business Insider, it remains unknown how the man allegedly stalked women with data accessed from Facebook. "It's important that people's information is kept secure and private when they use Facebook", Alex Stamos, Facebook's chief information security officer, said in a statement. "Access is scoped by job function, and designated employees are only allowed to access the amount of information that's necessary to carry out their job responsibilities, such as responding to bug reports, account support inquiries, or valid legal requests", a Facebook spokesperson said. A Twitter user prior on Wednesday posted about the Tinder discussion alongside screen captures, saying Facebook's security design is likely utilizing advantaged access to stalk ladies on the web. This week, during Facebook's F8 developer conference in San Jose, California, CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the social network was planning to roll out a new dating service to rival the likes of Tinder.
