Whoops! F8 website crashes as Facebook's biggest event of the year starts

Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg isn't going to let Facebook-related controversies like its repeated data privacy problems and Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential elections ruin his hopefulness.

He also said that the company was slow to identify the ways Russian Federation had used the platform to interfere in the 2016 elections, but that his team would never be unprepared again.

Facebook's chief executive once again mentioned that the company was in the process of hiring 20,000 people to shore up security, something the company had previously committed to.

Beyond data privacy, Facebook announced a slew of new features across Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp - and the news that the $199 Oculus Go virtual reality headset will be on sale starting Tuesday. This feature, Zuckerberg stressed, is based on the idea that websites generally need cookies to work, with users having the option to delete their viewing history anytime they please. "But the reality is, today, we haven't even built any features to help people find partners". "We'll share more information when this begins testing later this year", the announcement continues.

Daniel Kurnos, an analyst at the Benchmark Company, also cited the difficulty of creating a popular dating site, cautioning that it was not an overnight project and one that requires much more than sheer machine learning. The photo-sharing app is adding group video chats to its messaging tool. He also announced updates to Messenger.

This is an important moment.

The Facebook CEO will kick off F8, the company's annual conference for software developers.

The social network has faced questions on both sides of the Atlantic over how millions of users' details got into the hands of political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, and over its wider handling of personal data. Either you explicitly reveal this info to god knows who signs up for this event, or no one at all. If Facebook offered a dating service, it would essentially be eliminating the middleman. Zuckerberg said everyone in the audience would receive a free Oculus Go.

Like an old flame wrecking a first date, Facebook Inc burst in on the matchmaking scene on Tuesday and sent investors in rival apps on a panicked rush for the door.
