Chelsea legend Lampard backs Gerrard to succeed at Rangers

Liverpool legend Steven Gerrard has delivered an update on how his negotiations with Rangers over the vacant managerial post are progressing.

"Yes, there's truth in the rumours", Gerrard, who has no direct experience of Scottish football, told BT Sport on Tuesday in his role as a pundit on their Champions League coverage. I've held initial talks with Rangers and the plan is to pick them up in a couple of days' time. "There's an interest. I've held positive talks with them", he added. But, even if the 37-year-old, who is now the under-18 coach at Liverpool, accepts the job this week, he will not take charge until June.

Murty replaced Pedro Caixinha in October - the second time in a year that he had taken on that caretaker role - but lost his job after a humiliating 5-0 defeat to Celtic last weekend.

"Graeme has had to contend with hard and challenging circumstances but conducted himself in a thoroughly professional manner".

He returned to Liverpool's academy last summer to take charge of the under-18 side but it seems likely that the 37-year-old is ready to step up to management at a big club.

Ibrox chiefs, who have been in talks with former Liverpool and England midfielder Gerrard for the past week, say they hope to be able to release details about Murty's successor "in the near future".

The 'Gers sacked Graeme Murty today, leaving Jimmy Nicholl and Jonatan Johansson to take charge of their final three Scottish Premiership games of the season.

Speaking to talkSPORT, Lampard said: "In terms of the size of the club and knowing Steven pretty well, I think it's a great opportunity for him".

The Ibrox is seen by Gerrard as the "perfect environment" to prepare him for the Liverpool hot seat.
