George RR Martin tells fans 'Winds of Winter' isn't coming this year

Place your bets now on a special limited edition that will mark the end of Game of Thrones as a series, as THR notes that the show will now beat the books in terms of completion. The new book will simply be a history of the Westeros fans know and love.

It would be exciting news if not for the one big sticking point: the book series isn't finished and fans have been waiting many long years for "The Winds of Winter". Though showrunners Dan Weiss and David Benioff have said that Martin shared his endgame with them, which they are building to, there are plenty of ways for Martin's stories to continue to differ from the show (as has already been the case in the series so far). According to George R.R. Martin himself (via his blog), the book will not be hitting bookshelves this year. As for me, I'm returning once again to THE WINDS OF WINTER. Fans have been anticipating the penultimate book of the series that Game of Thrones is (or at least was) based on since the release of Martin's fifth book in the series, A Dance with Dragons, in 2011. "You're going to have to keep waiting for The Winds of Winter", Martin wrote. "I know I am going to be asked whether those shows are going to be based on material from Fire & Blood". Instead, the author is referring to it as an "imaginary history", after receiving backlash from fans in the past over his term "fake history" when he previously referred to The Princess and The Queen and Sons of the Dragon. The essential point being the "history" part. Also thrown in the mix will be Aenys, Maegor the Cruel, Jaehaerys I, Viserys I, and Aegon II. Martin wrote on his blog, "This is the book that I used to jokingly refer to as the GRRMarillion", referring to J.R.R. Tolkien's The Silmarillion, which serves as a historical background to his Middle Earth books. Within it fans will find information on all of the Targaryen kings starting with Aegon I...and this is just the first volume of the history books.
