Southwest cancels 40 flights Sunday for accelerated engine inspections

The airline said Sunday that has been cancelling roughly 1% of flights in order to conduct the inspections.

According to FlightAware, 119 Southwest flights were canceled Monday morning as of 10:00 a.m.

At the time, Southwest said those inspections would cause some impact on operations, but it has not said how many engines it planned to inspect.

Southwest Airlines has already said it will carry out an inspection of all of its planes with the same model of engine within the next 30 days.

A malfunctioning CFM56-7B forced a Southwest Airlines flight from NY to Dallas to make an emergency landing on Tuesday.

The schedule of inspections for affected CFM56-7B engines was outlined in a service bulletin from engine manufacturer CFM International, a 50-50 joint venture between GE and Safran Aircraft Engines. It's not clear how many of those are for inspections, but two flights.

No flights have been cancelled or rescheduled as a outcome of these actions.

A departing flight to Dallas at 7:40 a.m. was nixed, and Southwest canceled a flight leaving San Diego for Phoenix at 8:05 a.m.

Flight Fleets Analyzer shows that Indonesia's Sriwijaya Air is most exposed, with 26 aircraft powered by CFM56-7B engines in its fleet.

Last week, a passenger was killed when an engine failed and broke apart shattering a window.

Southwest announced last Tuesday that it would inspect CFM56-7B engines over the next month after one of the motors exploded shortly after taking off from LaGuardia Airport. This comes after the deadly incident on a flight earlier this week, according to statement released by the company.

Southwest said, however, the cancellations stemmed from its voluntary inspections - not the FAA directive issued Friday.
