Missouri Governor Greitens charged with felony tampering with computer data

"Like all criminal defendants, Governor Greitens is presumed innocent under the law until proven guilty".

St. Louis prosecutors on Friday charged Missouri Gov. Eric Greitens with a felony for using a charity donor list for his 2016 political campaign, adding to the woes of the first-term Republican governor who responded by calling it another effort to "smear" him.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley, a Republican whose office has been investigating The Mission Continues, announced Tuesday that he had found evidence to support a felony charge against Greitens, but said it was up to the St. Louis circuit attorney's office to file charges.

Hawley said at the time that his office was ready to assist the St. Louis circuit attorney if she chose to pursue the case.

"These are serious charges-and an important reminder that no one is above the law in Missouri", Hawley said in the statement.

Greitens is accused of allegedly taking a picture of a bound and partially nude woman with whom he was having an affair with at the time and threatened to blackmail her if she made the affair public.

Louis Circuit Attorney Kimberly Gardner charged Greitens with two counts of felony tampering with computer data after finding probable cause that the Republican governor violated Missouri law.

Eric Greitens was charged Friday with a felony of illegally obtaining a fundraising list from a veterans charity the once-rising political star co-founded. However, his timing in turning over the case drew pushback from some Democrats, who noted that the Associated Press first broke the news that Greitens had obtained the Mission Continues donor list in 2016.

The governor allegedly told the person to e-mail the donor list to Greitens's fundraiser.

A similar process was followed when Gardner brought an invasion of privacy indictment against Greitens in February - a case slated to go to trial on May 10.

The charity's employee handbook and its non-disclosure agreements "prohibited disclosure of the donor list and the retention of it by anyone not employed by and working on behalf of The Mission Continues", the probable cause statement said.

Separately, a special House investigatory committee is to recommend whether to pursue impeachment proceedings against Greitens. Dowd said. "Give me a break".

"When I came home from Iraq after service as a Navy SEAL, I started the Mission Continues to help veterans", Greitens said.

Greitens previously called Gardner a "reckless liberal prosecutor" for leading the investigation that resulted in the invasion-of-privacy charge. This prosecutor can come after me with everything she's got, but as all faithful people know: in time comes the truth.

Greitens, 44, a married father of two has acknowledged a months-long affair but denied any criminal wrongdoing, asserting he is the victim of a political witch hunt.

His attorney, Ed Dowd, said, "This charge makes no sense at all".

She is wasting thousands and thousands of taxpayer dollars to do all of this. "Not only did he create this list donor, by donor, friend by friend, but (the charity) still has the list".

Gardner's office began investigating after KMOV-TV in St. Louis first reported the affair on January 10, the day Greitens was giving his annual State of the State speech.

"This office will not be intimidated, and we will not be deterred", he said.
