Gov. Greitens asks court to issue restraining order against AG Hawley

Gov. Greitens asks court to issue restraining order against AG Hawley

Greitens in response ripped into both Hawley, who is running for U.S. Senate this year, and St. Louis Circuit Attorney Kim Gardner.

"Anyone who has set foot in a Missouri courtroom knows these allegations are ridiculous", Greitens said.

House Minority Leader Gail McCann Beatty is also calling for Greitens' resignation. If he doesn't step down, she says the House should immediately act to remove him.

April 2017: Greitens agrees to pay a small fine the Missouri Ethics Commission for failing to report that his gubernatorial campaign had, in fact, received the donor list of The Mission Continues in 2015.

Representatives for Greitens and Gardner's office declined to comment.

Hawley told reporters at a news conference that his office had found evidence that the governor obtained an electronic donor list from the charity The Mission Continues without permission and used the internal list for "political fundraising".

Louis prosecutor could bring another felony charge against Greitens for allegedly taking the donor list from a veterans' charity he founded and using it to raise money for his gubernatorial campaign. He also referred the matter to a House committee that will be recommending whether to impeach Greitens. Questions have been raised about his ties to the charity since at least October 2016, when The Associated Press reported that he had raised almost $2 million for his campaign from donors who also gave significant amounts to The Mission Continues.

August 2007: Greitens, a former Navy SEAL officer, founds the charity The Mission Continues in St. Louis.

Greitens initially denied to the AP in 2016 that he had used the donor list for his campaign.

After the investigative report was released, Hawley called on Greitens to resign from office.

In that request, the attorneys said if Hawley did not recuse himself, Greitens would "explore legal remedies".

The House committee is where the two criminal investigations come together.

Any remaining support Gov. Eric Greitens may have had from the Missouri legislature's top Republican leaders is now gone.

Eric Greitens, who is already facing calls to resign over an extramarital affair and abuse allegations, was accused Tuesday by the state's attorney general of obtaining a charity donor list without permission.

Before he was governor, Greitens founded The Mission Continues, a charity that helps military veterans returning from war.

Greitens has denied the allegations and called the report "incomplete". Attorney general spokeswoman Mary Compton says that's not related to Hawley's investigation into the charity's possible violations of the state's consumer protection and charitable registration and reporting laws. Senate Democrats proposed blocking all bills from going to Greitens' desk in protest of claims against him.
