Theresa May under fire over failure to consult on Syria strikes

With the latest USA missile strikes, President Donald Trump appears to have reset America's red line for military intervention in Syria over the use of chemical weapons.

Trump's use of that last phrase harks back to President George W. Bush's premature declaration of victory in Iraq, where USA troops remain 15 years after the initial US military engagement there - a mistake some critics say they fear Trump might repeat on Syria.

She spoke after the US led an air-and-sea missile attack overnight Friday on the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad, in response to his purported March 7 chemical attack on civilians, in the country's years-long civil war.

"When our president draws a red line, our president enforces the red line", she added.

"We are prepared to sustain this pressure, if the Syrian regime is foolish enough to test our will", Haley said.

Her remarks come after, the U.S., along with the United Kingdom (UK) and France together launched airstrikes against suspected chemical weapons facilities in the war-torn country.

The vote reflected support for the airstrikes on Syrian chemical sites but it also demonstrated again the paralysis of the U.N.'s most powerful body in dealing with the Syria conflict. Russian Federation said on Saturday it would consider supplying S-300 surface to-air missile systems to Syria following the Western strikes, but this was not discussed at the meeting with Assad, agencies reported.

The leaders reaffirmed the success of the military strikes and the joint effort to curb Syria's alleged use of chemical weapons.

One site hit by the barrage of missiles was the Bazrah Research Center, a scientific research center on the outskirts of Damascus. According to a Pentagon official, targets were selected that participated in the research, development and deployment of chemical weapons.

He said at least one chemical was used - chlorine, which has legitimate industrial uses and had not previously triggered a US military response.

Syria's air defense units shot down most of the air-to-surface missiles fired by the US-led military operation, Russia's Defence Ministry said.

"You can keep burning people alive and dropping barrel bombs over cities, but don't use chemical weapons, because it will make us look bad".

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime was suspected of orchestrating a chlorine attack, which occurred on April 7.

Soussan reiterated a pledge by the Syrian government that the chemical experts would be allow to investigate unimpeded.
