Turkey's Pres. Erdogan to Speak With Putin About Syria

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has called on world powers to stop "arms wrestling" on Syria amid an unprecedented upsurge of tension between the United States and Russian Federation over an alleged chemical attack near the Syrian capital earlier this month.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan raised his concerns in the wake of US President Donald Trump warning Russian Federation to brace for US military engagement in Syria.

Meanwhile, Turkish Foreign Ministry Spokesman Hami Aksoy said that there are strong suspicions that the chemical attack in the Syrian town of Douma, in the Damascus suburb of eastern Ghouta was carried out by the Assad regime.

While Turkey is cooperating with both Russian Federation and Iran to wind down some of the violence in Syria, Ankara has long demanded that President Bashar al-Assad must go and has backed rebels against him.

But Turkey and Russian Federation in recent months have put their differences aside and have been working closely to find a political solution to the conflict.

The spokesman also said the US -drafted United Nations Security Council resolution that would have set up an investigation committee into chemical weapons use in Syria, which was vetoed by Russian Federation on Tuesday, was "a missed opportunity".

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that Afrin should be handed over to Syria's army.

The current situation in the Kurdish-dominated Syrian city of Afrin remains quite tense since it went under the full control of the Turkish military forces in late March as a result of its military offensive in the area dubbed Olive Branch.

It comes a day after the Turkish leader talked to Donald Trump, who tweeted that missiles "are coming" to Bashar al-Assad's brutal Moscow-supported regime.

Turkey s foreign ministry has said it strongly suspects Assad was to blame but Russian Federation has denied that the Damascus regime was responsible.

On Jan. 20, Turkey launched Operation Olive Branch to clear PKK-linked People's Protection Units (YPG) and remaining Daesh terrorists from Afrin, northwestern Syria.
