Bevin claims children were sexually abused, tried drugs because of teacher protest

Finally, lawmakers overrode Bevin's veto of a bill which phases in increases in pension contributions by local governments and school districts. The rally took on a festival-like atmosphere as some teachers sat in lawn chairs or sprawled out on blankets. Crosby Stills, Nash and Young's hit "Teach Your Children" bellowed from the loud speakers.

But Friday, teachers cheered as Republicans voted to override Gov. Matt Bevin's vetoes.

Bevin also dissed protesting teachers for "hangin' out, shoes off. smokin', leavin' trash around, takin' the day off".

He expressed how appalled he was that people "discarded what's truly best for children", claiming that there were people who knew so many children were home and "took advantage of that".

Bevin asked. "I guarantee you somewhere in Kentucky today a child was sexually assaulted that was left at home because there was nobody there to watch them".

"Surely as we're having this conversation, children were harmed. some physically, some sexually, some were introduced to drugs for the first time, because they were vulnerable and left alone.it's offensive, frankly, it really is", Bevin told the Courier-Journal.

"Governor Bevin's statement is not only irrational and appalling, it is insulting to the educators and parents who are courageously and respectfully advocating for a better future for the Kentucky children", said García. President of the Kentucky Education Association Stephanie Winkler wrote on Twitter. "And to use that as a weapon for his political rhetoric against people who are standing up for public education and teachers and public employees, which also includes firefighters and police - it's extremely and absurdly out of line".

"I'm not going to comment on something I'm just hearing about", he said.

Organizers say there is still a lot of uncertainty and want legislators to know they're in Frankfort to support and preserve funding for public education.

In the interview, Bevin said, "This is what's insane to me". He also said it would not raise enough cash to pay for the shelling out.

The Kentucky House has overridden Gov. Matt Bevin's veto of a two-year state spending plan that increases education funding with the help of a $480 million tax increase.

The tax bill override passed the house before passing the Senate by a vote of 20-18. "Well, that's a coward", said Republican Rep. Regina Huff, a middle school special education teacher. "We have to have this revenue to fund our schools".

For different explanations, although Democrats sided with the Senate. But they also applauded Republicans who said they were voting to override the vetoes in order to fund education. The governor could call lawmakers back for a special session to pass a new budget and revenue bills. The House voted 94-2 to override while the Senate voted 34-4.

On Friday afternoon, the House voted 57-40 to override Bevin's veto of the tax bill. Teachers have paid their part.

Thousands of teachers rallied inside and outside the Capitol on Friday.

In Oklahoma, teachers ended two weeks of walkouts on Thursday, shifting their focus to electing proeducation candidates in November.

The teachers were protesting for their retirement benefits and for more education funding from the state, reportedly causing more than 30 school districts around the state to close due to the lack of available teachers, according to the Lexington Herald-Leader. They did so as teachers in red-clad t-shirts watched closely from the gallery. They are instead focused on education funding and a battle over their pensions.
