Russia: Britain staged fake chemical attack in Syria

"Not one of the cruise missiles released by the U.S. and its allies entered the zone of responsibility of Russian air defences protecting facilities in Tartus and Hmeimim", the ministry said in a statement carried by the RIA Novosti state news agency, referring to the locations of Russia's naval facility in Tartus and its Hmeimim air base.

Russia's United Nations ambassador warned that US-led strikes could lead to a confrontation between the world's two preeminent nuclear powers. "We can not take such risks", he said at a forum. "I can't go beyond that", Sanders told reporters.

She told an emergency meeting of the U.N. Security Council called by Russian Federation that should the USA and its allies decide to act in Syria it will be to defend "a bedrock global norm that benefits all nations" - the prohibition on the use of chemical weapons. "We hope there will be no point of no return".

USA allies have offered strong words of support for Washington but no clear military plans have yet emerged.

Karen Pierce said she wanted "to state categorically. that Britain has no involvement and would never have any involvement in the use of a chemical weapon".

Across Western capitals opposition to military action also grew. They are expected to start their investigations into the Douma incident on Saturday, the Netherlands-based agency said.

Trump himself appeared on Thursday to cast doubt on at least the timing of any US -led military action, tweeting: "Never said when an attack on Syria would take place".

A Downing Street spokesperson added: "They agreed it was vital that the use of chemical weapons did not go unchallenged, and on the need to deter the further use of chemical weapons by the Assad regime". "Could be very soon or not so soon at all!"

The Syria crisis has come as a test not only for Trump, but incoming White House national security adviser John Bolton, a hawk who joined Trump's team this week. "Our intelligence tells us otherwise".

Global stock markets have had a whipsaw week, largely fuelled by Trump's tendency to change his mind over top policy issues. The government's capture of Douma, the last town held by the rebels in eastern Ghouta, marked a major victory for Assad.

Trump has slammed Russian Federation for its partnership with "Gas Killing Animal" Assad, spurring concerns that a United States strike could lead to a conflict with Russian Federation, which has major military facilities at Tartus and Khmeimim and works cheek-by-jowl with Syria forces that could be targeted. Rebels and jihadist insurgents are largely contained to two areas on Syria's northern and southern borders.
