Belgian cyclist Goolaerts dies after crash at Paris-Roubaix

Michael Goolaerts fell during the Paris-Roubaix race on Sunday and was hospitalized amid unconfirmed media reports the Belgian rider suffered a cardiac arrest.

"I avoided crashes, and, actually, I feel less exhausted than the previous years", said Sagan, the first rider since Frenchman Bernard Hinault to win here as a world champion.

Paris-Roubaix victor Peter Sagan and second-placed rider Silvan Dillier were both fined 1000 Swiss Francs (CHF) for taking on "unauthorised refuelling" during the final 20 kilometres of the race.

"He passed away on Sunday evening at 22.40 in Lille Hospital in the presence of his family members and loved ones, who we keep in our thoughts", said his team, Veranda's Willems-Crelan, on Twitter.

Terpstra and his Quick Step-Floors team, who had been dominant on the Flanders classics so far, simply could not contain the Bora-Hansgrohe leader Sagan.

David Lappartient, president of the Union Cycliste Internationale, expressed the organisation's sadness at the tragic news. "We share their vast sadness", he posted on Twitter.

Sagan, the three-time world champion from Slovakia, and Dillier rode together at the front for the last 25 kilometres (15.5 miles).

British Team Sky rider Geraint Thomas was forced to abandon the race after crashing on the first section of cobbles.

There have been numerous deaths among professional cyclists while competing in recent years, including others by cardiac arrest.

Over the years, several riders have fallen foul of taking a late feed or drink during a race.

Another Belgian cyclist, Antoine Demoitie, died the same year following a crash in the Gent-Wevelgem race.

Nairo Quintana, a previous victor of the Giro d'Italia and Vuelta, tweeted: "Upset about the death of Michael Goolaerts today in #ParisRoubaix".
