Anti-Semitism row: Israel Labor halts relations with Jeremy Corbyn

Labour Friends of Israel's Director Jennifer Gerber said today: "We fully understand why the Israeli Labor Party has made a decision to suspend relations with Jeremy Corbyn".

A letter sent to Corbyn, who is avowedly pro-Palestinian, also stated that his "public hatred" of Israel's state policies acted as a deterrent to any constructive relations.

Labor Israel's Avi Gabbay wrote to Jeremy Corbyn: "I write to inform you of the temporary suspension of all formal relations between the Israel Labor Party and the Leader of the Labor Party UK".

"It is my responsibility to acknowledge the hostility you have shown to the Jewish community and the anti-Semitic statements and actions you have allowed as leader of the Labour party UK", Avi Gabbay told Corbyn in a letter via Twitter. I have asked the International Secretary of the Labor Party Israel to update me quarterly on this situation and should this suspension change, you will be updated accordingly.

Some 250 demonstrators gathered in Westminster today to criticise the Labour leader's approach to tackling anti-Semitism in the party.

James Sorene, CEO of Israel and Middle East think tank BICOM said: "The Israeli Labour Party has been close to its United Kingdom sister party for decades".

Mr Corbyn said the Labor Party should have had the "courtesy" to have spoken to him before severing relations. "I am a strong believer that engaging in meaningful dialogue is crucial to finding effective solutions and resolving disputes and I am clear that such a meeting would be just the start of a fruitful ongoing exchange on eradicating antisemitic behavior and discourse within the Labour party".

Corbyn posted a statement to be read out at a demonstration supporting the Palestinians in Gaza, saying "the killing and wounding of yet more unarmed Palestinian protesters yesterday by Israeli forces in Gaza is an outrage".

The letter comes two weeks after Jewish groups held a demonstration outside Parliament to protest against Corbyn's perceived lack of action in tackling anti-Semitism among some Labour supporters.

Israel's Labor Party announced on April 10 that it has suspended ties with UK Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn, accusing him of "sanctioning anti-Semitism". "Clearly this proves that the Jewish Labour Movement's work is more important than ever, and we're not going anywhere".
