Like a Boss: Facebook Users Can Have Same Privilege as Zuckerberg

The requirement for issue ads is new. "We're working on rolling our AI tools out everywhere and in all these languages". That's two and a half years ago", Guthrie said, "and only now is Facebook taking these serious steps that you've announced this week. "There's the Mexican presidential election, there are big elections in India and Brazil as well as in Pakistan and Hungary and a number of other countries and the United States midterms, of course".

The news comes as Facebook grapples with the revelation that some 87m users may have had their personal data harvested by Cambridge Analytica, a political consulting group that worked on the 2016 USA election and Britain's European Union referendum vote.

"Everyone globally on their Facebook page will see an alert leading them to the apps setting where they can review the apps they've allowed to access to their data", said Facebook.

The Russian-sponsored groups had stirred up political divides during the United States presidential election in 2016 by creating fake profiles. Nor did Facebook explain just when it chose to roll out the feature more broadly.

Cambridge Analytica is under investigation in both the United States and the UK for the way it obtained as many as 87 million users' data from Facebook and for whether it used that data to target voters on behalf of the Trump campaign in the U.S. and the Brexit referendum in the UK. It did not give a specific date, but it did say that users can expect the feature to arrive in the next several months.

To get authorized by Facebook, "advertisers will need to confirm their identity and location", the statement said.

"Advertisers will be prohibited from running political ads electoral or issue-based until they are authorised".

The move marks the latest in a series of efforts by the social networking giant amid revelations that it had lost control of the profile information of millions of users, which was then used to potentially influence elections around the world.

"I'm not going to sit here and say that we're not going to find more because we are", she warned later in the interview, adding, "Were making a big shift here and it's a shift we're making to be more protective".

There has been no official announcement about the new delete feature, and there's a sense that Facebook is reacting to crisis after crisis in the wake of the Cambridge Analytica scandal with slap-dash measures on an ad-hoc basis.

"Europe was ahead on this", she told the FT. People are inputting data.
