US Surgeon General Wants More People To Carry An Anti-Overdose Drug

After the second incident, the three owners of Alfalfa's - Mark Homlish, Tripp Wall and Mike Corenblat - chose to keep the often lifesaving drug in stores and provide training to senior employees.

It's a nationwide crisis as well and that is why the United States Surgeon General, Dr. Jerome Adams, is recommending that more Americans carry the opioid overdose reversing drug naloxone.

Surgeon General Jerome Adams urged people who struggle with opioid abuse and their family members and friends to obtain naloxone from a pharmacy, and learn to use it in case of emergency.

Naloxone, which is carried by most police and first responders, is available without a prescription in most states. "It is time to make sure more people have access to this lifesaving medication, because 77 percent of opioid overdose deaths occur outside of a medical setting and more than half occur at home".

The last surgeon general public health advisory was issued in 2005 and focused on prenatal alcohol exposure. "To manage opioid addiction and prevent future overdoses, increased naloxone availability must occur in conjunction with expanded access to evidence-based treatment for opioid use disorder".

According to the US Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, overdose deaths from prescription and illicit opioids doubled from 21,089 in 2010 to 42,249 in 2016.

There's also a greater need for services as the opioid epidemic outpaced available government funding. The drug, approved for use since 1971, is an effective remedy that can be safely administered by lay personnel who receive basic instructions.

"It's an opiate antagonst, so what it does is reverses the effects of the opiate", Daniel said.

Even if the person isn't experiencing an opioid overdose, a dose of naloxone won't harm them.

Adams' recommendation for more people to possess naloxone comes a month after Philadelphia's health department urged residents to do the same. Since 2013, there have been 123 overdose reversals reported on the app. "We take it seriously", Gonzalez said. It can cost around $80 for one dose.

"I think he's right on point", said Jeffrey Reynolds, president and CEO of the Family and Children's Association, which provides substance-abuse treatment programs on Long Island.

Mendell praised Adams' call for broader naloxone access, but said there was "more than frustration" with the Trump administration's handling of the opioid problem thus far.

Noonan was also happy to hear about the new advisory, she said, as it will start a conversation, if nothing else.
