New NFL rule prohibiting helmet contact dubbed a 'significant change'

If that James play had not been called incomplete but a touchdown, the outcome of that game would've been drastically different just like the Super Bowl's could've been too, had the officiating not been done on the fly or new rules being implemented before being ratified by the league and its owners.

On Tuesday, at the Annual League Meeting in Florida, all 32 owners voted to approve modifications to the NFL's catch rule for the 2018 season.

As some writers noted, the rule could be hard to officiate for two reasons: Players with the ball may brace themselves for tackles by lowering their heads to protect the ball and their bodies. The player must also make a "football move", such as an additional step or reaching toward the goal line or first-down marker. Packers President Mark Murphy said the rule will rarely be enforced, saying he's counted only five plays last season that would result in an ejection.

"If we end up with 10 more fumbles but five of the most exciting plays of the year", McKay said, "it's a trade we'd make any day".

The latest news on the NFL's catch rule could change that.

"I think that it's great that it's finally cut and dry, black and white", Fitzgerald said.

The James call was particularly impactful because the Steelers wound up losing to New England in a December game that determined home-field advantage for the playoffs.

While discussing his upcoming Celebrity Softball Game at Salt River Fields on April 21, Fitzgerald talked about the new rule with ABC15's Craig Fouhy. "Really what we're looking at are space plays". There are many reasons that the NFL has seen its ratings dip in recent years, but the pace of a football game is undoubtedly among them.

"This rule change is not gonna solve every single issue, you're still gonna have a certain amount of subjectivity", said John Mara, the owner of the New York Giants.

As McKay outlines, the rule change simply gives the officials authority to make these ejections.

"It is a foul if a player lowers his head to initiate and make contact with his helmet against his opponent", Rich McKay, chairman of the Competition Committee the National Football League, said at the owners meeting in Orlando. Lowering the head, sadly, is what Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Ryan Shazier did when he suffered his serious spinal injury in December."We're getting to a point where the technique is too unsafe", Rich McKay, the chairman of the league's competition committee, said during a hastily arranged press conference Tuesday afternoon. This is seemingly well-intentioned.

Withdrawn by the Jets was a proposal to limit defensive pass interference to 15 yards, the penalty in college, except for egregious incidents. McKay said the voters weren't there to pass it.
