Arizona is suspending Uber's self-driving car tests after a fatal crash

The incident was the first fatality involving a self-driving vehicle.

Last weekend's fatal, self-driving vehicle crash could make cities less likely to trust the company and undermine Uber's claim that it's a platform rather than a transportation service.

China's capital city has given the green light to tech giant Baidu Inc to test self-driving cars on city streets, indicating strong support for the budding sector even as the industry reels from a fatal accident in the United States.

Referring to the video in a letter to Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi, Ducey said he found the incident "disturbing and alarming".

"We proactively suspended self-driving operations in all cities immediately following the tragic incident last week", an Uber spokesperson told FOX Business. Uber has commented on the same via Twitter, saying that they are continuing the co-operation with the investigators and will be addressing any concerns the Governor's office could have. With time, Uber has invented the autonomous vehicle which belongs to the self-driving auto technology series.

Police and safety regulators are investigating the crash in which a woman walking her bicycle across a four-lane road at night was struck and killed by an Uber self-driving SUV.

Uber has yet to submit a safety letter to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration but said it is in the process of doing so. "I firmly believe the time to have a meaningful discussion on a safety validation framework for fully autonomous vehicles is now", Shashua said.

Uber's self-driving vehicle tests come to a halt in Arizona.

Uber's self driving vehicles in Arizona have required human intervention on an average of every 13 miles (20.9 kilometres), which is significant when compared to the 5,600 miles (9,012 kilometres) between interventions required by Waymo's AVs in Californian trials.

Companies developing self-driving technology, which also include General Motors Co, Toyota Motor Corp and a host of startups, are waiting to see whether fall-out from the accident leads to new restrictions on the relatively unregulated sector. "At Uber, we are committed to working within our communities to help provide opportunities to those who need them most". Ducey said he directed the Arizona Department of Transportation to suspend Uber's ability to test and operate autonomous vehicles. The training continues with manual and self-driving cars on closed courses, more written tests, training on pre-selected routes with an instructor in the vehicle's backseat and, finally, training on public roads with an experienced self-driving auto operator. But, with something like driverless cars much of its credibility has been built on the fact that it will be a safe technology, much safer than a driver only vehicle.
