She says opposition leaders were intimidated or jailed. "When I look at a Russian election, what I see is a lack of credibility in tallying the results". She said a summary of the call would be released later. President Donald Trump has not called and has no plans to do so at present, White House spokesman Hogan Gidley told journalists Monday. Trump has often refrained from outright condemnation of Russian Federation and has mostly refused to comment on claims that the country tried to influence the last presidential election. John McCain and others for calling Putin on Tuesday to congratulate him for his re-election.

The British government has blamed Moscow for the attack with a military-grade nerve agent. Russian Federation denies interference in the election.

"The president can call whomever he chooses", McConnell said at his weekly news conference Tuesday.

Trump said that he called Putin to congratulate him on winning his fourth term in office, and listed policy concerns that the two leaders meant to discuss in the future, including the "out of control" arms race.

The former United States presidential candidate John McCain was quick to criticise Trump for his failure to raise allegations of widespread voter irregularities.

"President Trump has insulted every Russian citizen who was denied the right to vote in a free and fair election to determine their country's future, including the countless Russian patriots who have risked so much to protest and resist Putin's regime", the statement continued.

McCain has previously called Putin a murderer and a thug.

Trump's optimistic attitude regarding a meeting with Putin comes as sanctions were imposed on Russian Federation in retaliation for its efforts to interfere in the 2016 presidential election.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders defended Trump's call, and noted that President Barack Obama made a similar call at the time of Putin's last electoral victory. The election was tainted by reports of voting irregularities.

President Donald Trump on Tuesday congratulated Vladimir Putin on his re-election, a week after the United States took a harder stance toward Russian Federation, and said they would likely meet soon to discuss the arms race and crises in Ukraine, Syria and North Korea.

In addition, the two presidents expressed satisfaction with the apparent easing of tensions over North Korea's weapons program, according to the Kremlin.

Trump "emphasized the importance of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula", the White House added in a separate statement.

The Kremlin said Tuesday's conversation between the two leaders had been broadly constructive and focused on overcoming problems in relations, which are at a post-Cold War low. The White House said the two leaders had a very good call and could meet again in the near future.
