Florida campus honors bridge collapse victims

The portion of the bridge that collapsed was made to hold its own weight until the whole bridge was assembled. Figg Bridge Engineers knew that there was cracking evident, but nothing was done to try to correct the issue before it collapsed. The bridge was being built for FIU, and FIU was involved in the project delivery.

The nation was rocked by the recent news of the Florida International University bridge collapse, and now the college campus has finally reopened. Those killed were Rolando Fraga, 60, Oswald Gonzalez, 57, Alberto Arias, 53, Alexa Duran, 18, Navaro Brown, 37, and Brandon Brownfield, 39. A sixth victim died in hospital.

Matt Morgan, an Orlando attorney representing Hepburn, said lawsuits stemming from the collapse could result in up to $1 billion in damages to victims and their relatives.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the disaster, but has yet to determine what caused the collapse.

About three hours after the meeting ended, the bridge collapsed.

On Friday, NTSB investigator Robert Accetta said work crews were applying post-tensioning force on the bridge support cables when the span fell down, but investigators aren't sure if that's what caused the bridge to fall.

A crane is seen near a newly installed pedestrian bridge, that collapsed, over a six-lane highway in Miami, March 15, 2018. Just two days before Thursday's horrific collapse, one of the lead engineers for the project left a voice mail with Florida's department of transportation: "Some cracking that's been observed on the north end of the span..."

Morgan said his client's case hinges on what officials knew about the span's integrity and "why were vehicles allowed to travel underneath that bridge if the bridge might have been in a vulnerable state?"

Hepburn hired the law firm Morgan&Morgan and is suing a host of entities involved in the design, construction and oversight of the bridge, "who undertook and allowed inherently risky construction activities to proceed without necessary safety precautions".

"From a safety perspective we don't see that there's any issue there, so we're not concerned about it from that perspective", Denney Pate, with FIGG bridge engineers, said in the voicemail, which FDOT released to the public, "although obviously the cracking is not good and something's going to have to be, ya know, done to fix that".

Figg Bridge Engineers said that it will fully cooperate with every appropriate authority in reviewing what happened and why.
