Wigan Athletic vs. Southampton (FA Cup): Opposition threat

Southampton have only conceded one goal in three FA Cup games; two of these came against Premier League opposition and the other against free-scoring Championship outfit Fulham.

Southampton are now fighting relegation from the Premier League but new manager Hughes was impressed with both the quality of his players and their performances in his maiden game.

The former Stoke boss said: "This was an important fixture".

"We've got to keep that energy high and confidence high, because clearly that's in a better place now, so we need to continue in the same vein in the Premier League".

"We did not create enough in the first half, but we were resolute throughout and made the right decisions in the key moments". We had to show a lot of the qualities and traits a good team has to show on a regular basis and maybe that hasn't been sustained prior to me coming to the club. I wanted to play more in their half in the second half and we started brightly in that regard.

After 62 minutes, they took the lead that the shift in momentum merited, as Hojbjerg was left unmarked 15 yards out and drilled home directly from a Dusan Tadic corner.

Mark Hughes thinks the form of Nathan Redmond could determine whether he leads Southampton to survival.

Gabbiadini, scorer now of one goal in his last 20 games, had the flawless opportunity to improve that desperate record but saw a firm spot-kick saved brilliantly by Christian Walton, diving to his left.

Wigan continued to press and Grigg was allowed space in Southampton's six-yard box after 36 minutes but he couldn't get his shot away.

Hughes' main goal is to help Southampton preserve their top-flight status and they dropped into the relegation zone on Saturday as Crystal Palace won in the league while the Saints were preparing for their quarter-final. "There is good quality, good traits, good behaviours which we can work on".

"Now Wembley will be a nice occasion".

Nathan Byrne linked up with Will Grigg after 14 minutes but the Northern Ireland worldwide dragged his shot wide from close range.

But the Saints - who were being managed by Mark Hughes for the first time following his appointment until the end of the season in midweek - made sure that the League One promotion-chasers paid for their inability to take their chances. Sometimes the players' view is totally insular: it's a bit like they are in their own bubble and you have to understand that.

"You can't ask for any more than four games against four Premier League teams and the Man City game will live long in the memory".

Wigan: Christian Walton 8 (out of 10), Nathan Byrne 7, Chey Dunkley 7, Dan Burn 7, Callum Elder 6, Sam Morsy 7, Gavin Massey 6, Max Power 6, Gary Roberts 6, Michael Jacobs 6, Will Grigg 6.
