Wannabe YouTube star jailed over boyfriend's botched shooting stunt death

Perez, a 20-year-old mother of two children, believed her boyfriend Pedro Ruiz would be shielded by a thick book as she shot him at a close range last June in front of onlookers. In June of previous year, the couple thought up a stunt in which Perez would shoot Ruiz while he held a book; he thought the book would stop the bullet, BuzzFeed News reports.

Monalisa Perez pleaded guilty to manslaughter back in December in order to avoid a 4-year prison term. For starters, she will be on probation for 10 years and is banned from ever possessing a firearm again.

Even before they filmed the stunt Perez tweeted, "Me and Pedro are probably going to shoot one of the most risky videos ever".

Norman County Attorney James Brue said that "this foolish stunt was dreamed up, planned, and executed by Pedro Ruiz, and the defendant wrongfully and tragically relied on his assurances that the stunt was safe", the Star Tribune reported. According to a local paper, the Star Tribune, Perez was pregnant when she shot Ruiz with a Desert Eagle handgun. The shooting on June 26, 2017 was part of aspiring YouTube star Pedro Ruiz's efforts to build an online following by performing unsafe stunts, according to police and media reports.

Also as part of the sentence the judge said MonaLisa could never profit off the shooting death of her boyfriend.

Her YouTube channel remains active almost nine months after the shooting.

Perez and Ruiz wanted to become famous and showcase their pranks on a YouTube channel.

The couple had been posting video blogs, "pranks" and "challenges" to their YouTube channel for several months before the June 2017 shooting. The video of the shooting was never uploaded and was submitted as evidence to law enforcement.

She said the man's response was, "We want more viewers".

Gudmundson told the judge that his client didn't feel she could make a statement. She is eligible to serve the final three months in home confinement.

If MonaLisa hadn't taken a plea deal, she would've faced a maximum of 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $20,000.

Family members said that they disagreed with the notion that it was Ruiz's idea to try to pull off the stunt.
