Trump Jr. Campaigns For Saccone Day Before Special Election

The fight between Republican state Rep. Rick Saccone and Democrat Conor Lamb has drawn national attention as a bellwether for the midterm election in November.

"This didn't have much to do with President Trump", Lamb said after voting outside Pittsburgh, where he's locked in an unexpectedly tight race with Republican Rick Saccone in a special election that serves as a barometer ahead of November's midterm elections. Open from 7 8 p.m., you can also check where your closest polling location is.

Because of a long-running fight over Pennsylvania's congressional boundaries, the victor will have to start campaigning for re-election nearly immediately in a different district.

"There is no doubt that Mr. Lamb has benefited from running against a lackluster opponent", the Times's editorial board wrote, but noted that "without a serious Democratic challenger, Mr. Saccone might have coasted to victory" in the special election.

Former Republican Rep. Tim Murphy had represented the area. He has run a campaign ad with a picture of him shooting what appears to be an AR-15. Other recent visitors include the vice-president, the president's eldest son, the president's daughter and the president's chief counsellor. As a close observer here in western Pennsylvania, it's clear to me that the passion is on the side of the anti-Trump voters who intend to send a message by electing Conor Lamb. On Tuesday he voted for Lamb.

In addition, Ostermeier said, Pennsylvania Democrats have won a smaller share of House races the past three election cycles than in any three-election stretch since the 1928 through 1932 period.

Tariffs: He supports President Donald Trump's steel and aluminum tariffs, saying at a debate that "we have to take some action to level the playing field". "I've talked to many of these on the left". And I'm the person with the experience and the record of doing that. That's a lot. That's why I'm here.

Delano: Like the Democrats, the Republicans do not have a primary to select their nominee in a special congressional election.

But Murphy, who espoused strong anti-abortion views, resigned last fall amid revelations of an extramarital affair in which he urged his lover to get an abortion when they thought she was pregnant.

Saccone spoke to reporters shortly before casting his ballot Tuesday near his home in rural Allegheny County south of Pittsburgh. "I've already said ... that I don't support Nancy Pelosi".

Besides bruising the president, a Lamb defeat also could shake Republican self-assurance that their new tax law is an omnipotent offense and defense in their midterm matchups.

Despite the Trump administration's efforts to help the coal industry, mines keep closing. The consistent fundraising deficit has left him with limited resources to air the message he delivers one-on-one: His four decades of experience in the private sector, global business and now the legislature make voters' choice a no-brainer. Lamb supports gun-owners rights and opposed a proposal to raise the minimum purchase age for a rifle to 21, but backs expanding background checks.

Pelosi is a prolific fundraiser for House Democrats, and a DCCC spokeswoman told The Washington Post last month that she was "easily the Committee's highest fundraiser".

Taxes: He called the GOP tax bill a "giveaway" to wealthy Americans and said he supports cuts for the middle class.

Lamb took to the role, positioning himself as a centrist even as national Republican forces descended on the district to fill airwaves and social media with depictions of the first-time candidate as little more than a lemming for Nancy Pelosi - the California Democrat, House minority leader and GOP punching bag.

Taxes: Backed the GOP tax bill.

The labor vote will be key in determining whether Lamb can upset Republican Rick Saccone in a district with an estimated 87,000 union household voters. His campaign has been endorsed by the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, the mine workers' union, and the steel workers.
