More than 110000 without power in Pennsylvania after storm

A 30cm of snow and fierce wind gusts of up to 88kmph were expected from eastern NY through northern ME on Thursday after the storm slammed the region on Wednesday, the National Weather Service said in several watches and warnings. North Adams, Massachusetts, registered 24 inches, and Sloatsburg, New York, got 26 inches.

Steve Marchillo, a finance director at the University of Connecticut's Hartford branch, said he enjoyed the sight of heavily snow-laden trees on his way into work Thursday but they also made him nervous.

"New England will still be feeling the effects of the wind and residual snowfall (though light) through Friday", Guy said.

Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker urged residents to use caution and stay off the roads during the height of the storm.

The storm gained strength overnight, greasing the roads before the morning commute, as wind gusts churned the flakes aloft and restricted drivers' visibility.

The storm packed gusts of 30 to 50 miles per hour - a far cry from the 90-mph gusts recorded during the weekend storm - but still damaging. While a far cry from the 90-mph gusts recorded over the weekend, the strong winds could impede efforts to restore power in the region.

However, the American model shows the storm moving much closer, potentially bringing another nor'easter near the coast.

In New Jersey, a middle school teacher was struck by lightning while helping with buses during dismissal, Manchester Police said. There could be isolated snow totals of over 18 inches where the heaviest bands set up, but heavily populated areas near the coast won't see that much.

More than a foot of snow fell in parts of the state Wednesday, causing treacherous travel in some areas.

Snow from the storm is expected to be heaviest through the afternoon and evening hours on Wednesday, according to Dean. It was a different story north and west. Parts of Orange and Rockland counties in NY got 26 inches.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh announced public schools will be closed on Thursday.

Coastal flooding is also a concern, with a warning in effect for eastern MA, the National Weather Service said.

If you think you heard thunder as the snow was coming down, you probably did. It is an indication of the low, warmer air rising really fast into the sky, hitting the colder high air and falling swiftly as snow.

Around half of all United States scheduled flights were canceled at the three major airports serving New York City, according to the tracking service FlightAware.

Mayor Marty Walsh reminded residents to take their time shoveling as the snow is heavy and to help elderly or disabled neighbors if possible.
