Italy election: Exit polls point to hung parliament

"Today a good path begins", League's leader Matteo Salvini told a press conference in Milan.

The coalition is short of an overall majority, however, after the populist Five Star Movement became the leading single party with 32 percent of the vote.

The country faces a prolonged period of political instability after voters delivered a hung parliament on Sunday, spurning traditional parties and flocking to anti-establishment and far-right groups in record numbers.

Earlier on Monday, Asian markets fell again as the fallout from Trump's proposed steel and aluminium tariffs fanned fears of a global trade conflict.

According to the Termometro Politico poll, based on the interview of 4,500 people, between February 3 and 10, M5S received 26.3 percent of the vote, and Forza Italia had 15.9 percent of the vote in the poll, signaling that the center-right bloc could win a majority if the coalition gets the predicted 37.5 percent.

Within the alliance, former prime minister Silvio Berlusconi's Forza Italia (Go Italy!) was seen winning 12.5-15.5 percent, the same as the League, which has allied itself to anti-immigration, anti-Islam parties across Europe.

League leader Matteo Salvini said he had "the right and the duty" to form a government after its surprise success at the heart of a right-wing coalition. They both used to call for Italy to quit the euro, but while 5-Star says the moment has now passed, the League says it still wants to leave the single currency at the first politically feasible moment.

"Immigrants are the ideal scapegoat for all manner of angst, both economic and cultural, and very easy fertile ground for the populists", said Simon Tilford, chief economist for the Institute for Social Change.

While the populist party's share of the vote is not enough to form a ruling party, its 31 year-old leader, Luigi Di Maio, has reportedly said he is now open to forming an alliance.

Both the center-right bloc and the 5-Stars insisted Monday that they should be given the right to form a government in Italy.

The result exceeded expectations and thrust the party into the driving seat of a right-wing alliance forged by Silvio Berlusconi.

"The vote has radically transformed Italy's political landscape and its repercussions will be long-lasting", Piccoli, the co-founder of the Teneo Intelligence consultancy, said.

The center-left failed to convince voters with its pro-European message of gradual economic recovery while the anti-immigrant and euro skeptic League party of Matteo Salvini gained huge ground.

Russia's RT headlined with the "boom in euroskeptic anti-establishment parties".

However the Euro skeptic French politician Marine Le Pen tweeted her congratulations to the Northern League and heralded the "arrival of a coalition led by the League". The process, brokered by Italian president Sergio Mattarella, might take weeks. The new League moved from 4 percent to 18.6 percent of the national vote-a jump of more than 400 percent-while Forza Italia fell from 21.5 percent to 13.5 percent.

Though no party will be able to rule alone based on latest results, the surge of support for populist parties has been compared with Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in the US.

"No, no, no", Salvini said when asked about the possibility of governing with the 5-Stars. The other big victor from a ballot that will shake the rest of Europe was the hard right, populist Northern League, riding a wave of alarm in Italy over the arrival in recent years of hundreds of thousands of migrants.

Italy is finally growing, albeit anemically, after a decade of no growth, but the economy remains far smaller than it was before the financial crisis of 2008.
