Gary Oldman wins Best Actor Oscar

British-born Gary Oldman publicly acknowledged his adopted nation during his acceptance speech for his role portraying Prime Minister Winston Churchill in 'Darkest Hour, ' saying the U.S. has given him many "loves and friendships" over the years. Oldman was a clear favorite in the category, sweeping the precursor awards to the Oscars and winning the Golden Globes best actor in a drama trophy. "I just won an Oscar", said Oldman at the end of his acceptance speech.

Oldman underwent hours of makeup to portray Churchill in the film, which focuses on a pivotal time in the British leader's career when he rallied his country to fight the Nazis.

McDormand, who previously won the Best Actress Oscar in 1997 for her performance in Fargo, earned her Academy Award this year for playing a woman bent on revenge after her daughter is brutally raped and murdered. "But I'm not remotely sour-faced", she said, according to the Press Association. The English actor was accused of choking and beating his then-wife Donya Fiorentino in 2001 with a telephone while their young children watched. Gary grabbed the phone receiver from my hand, and hit me in the face with the telephone receiver three or four times.

Sunday's win is Oldman's first, and only his second nomination, despite a lengthy career of performances.

The police investigated Fiorentino's claims and charges were never filed, with Oldman describing her account as "replete with lies, innuendos and half-truths". The case was eventually dropped after Bryant's accuser refused to testify, with Bryant's defense strategy reliant on questioning the victim's reputation. As for the Best Original Song, the award went to "Remember Me" from Best Animated Feature victor "Coco".

Oldman's win arrives amid a growing backlash against the actor, as allegations of domestic violence against him have resurfaced.

So as you can imagine getting Oldman would have been a bit of a coup for the show - with Piers and Susanna shouting encouragement from the studio back in London as the Darkest Hour star - stopped to talk to someone else entirely. He had been considered the front-runner for the best actor award, having swept awards season.

Jennifer Lawrence and Jodie Foster - both Oscar winners - presented the Award for Best Actress this year.
