At Least 5 Dead In Windstorm Wreaking Havoc Across US East Coast

At least five people were killed after a major winter storm pounded the US East Coast on Friday, with strong winds, heavy rain and snow disrupting thousands of flights and forcing the closure of federal government offices in Washington.

Walker noted that the combination of high winds and sustained rain, which softens the ground, could cause trees to fall and power outages. A man and a 6-year-old boy were killed in different parts of Virginia, while an 11-year-old boy in NY state and a man in Newport, Rhode Island, both were killed.

Meanwhile, local media said fallen trees also killed an 11-year-old boy in Putnam Valley, New York, and a man in his 70s in Newport, Rhode Island.

A brutal winter storm blasted the East Coast on Friday as it morphed from a nor'easter to a "bomb cyclone".

The Tennessean reported early Friday morning that some two dozen flights in and out of Nashville's worldwide airport had been canceled because of the bad weather up north.

The high winds started Friday and by Friday evening were pulling down tree branches, trees and power lines resulting in police departments in several South Shore communities, including Scituate, to send out a phone a message indicating a travel ban was in effect.

In Massachusetts, the main concern was flooding.

"Take this storm seriously!" the National Weather Service in Boston warned via Twitter Friday. Authorities rescued hundreds of people who either ignored or delayed in heeding evacuation notices. "We were preparing for the storm last week", he said. PECO, Pennsylvania's largest electric company, said more than 80,000 of its customers were without power.

Floodwaters in Quincy, Massachusetts, submerged cars and trapped people in their homes.

Quincy Mayor Thomas P. Koch released periodic statements on YouTube, updating the city of about 93,000 residents on damage and rescue efforts.

"We've been here a long time and we've never seen it as bad as this", said Alex Barmashi, as he took in the fearsome spectacle along Cape Cod Bay in Bourne, Massachusetts. Heavy snow also fell on areas including Pennsylvania and New Jersey, reported ABC.

MA is taking the brunt of the storm, which hit Friday and is not expected to ease up until midday Saturday. "They were just in the house and a wave of water just actually knocked a wall right out of the house, and they lost everything".

The flooding in MA has prompted local emergency services to warn residents against attempting to drive through the waters.

"Everything worked in our favor except for the high volume of calls", Brady said.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, Massachusetts Gov. Charlie Baker and Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam announced states of emergencies Friday. The state of MA has seen more than 100,000 power outages, with authorities warning that additional power cuts are likely.

The storm hit Friday and weakened Saturday as it headed out to sea.

"In addition to the magnitude of the high wind gusts, the duration of the winds will add to the hazardous nature of this event, as winds will continue through the weekend before diminishing below 30 miles per hour Sunday afternoon".

Airlines, including Delta, United and Southwest, are offering fee waivers for flight cancellations or changes involving affected airports. Amtrak said it cancelled more than a dozen trains and modified its schedule in the Northeast on Saturday. More than 600 of those are at Logan Airport in Boston, LaGuardia and Newark. Snowfall in NY ranged from 10 to 20 inches, and more than 300,000 people were without power.

A powerful storm sweeping up the East Coast is expected to cause extensive coastal flooding in southern ME starting late Friday morning. In the beach town of Nags Head, authorities warned of moderate to severe flooding but that didn't seem to deter some residents.

"We had assessed the area to be safe to open to the public and unfortunately an avalanche did occur after that assessment was made", she said.
