South Africa's EFF says will boycott election of new president

The Economic Freedom Fighters says it will not legitimise the election of incoming president Cyril Ramaphosa by participating in the process in Parliament on Thursday.

Malema admitted he felt robbed by the fact that he would not be leading a motion of no confidence against Zuma. It was a decision of a meeting of opposition parties and therefore as people who are loyal to their own decisions, we are loyal to this decision, the DA has submitted a motion, we'll support them. There shouldn't be an election of a president.

This was seen as an indication that Zuma refused to resign as president, but this was dismissed by ANC treasurer general Paul Mashatile.

Malema continued: "The constitutional court found that this parliament did not play its role, particularly when it came to holding Zuma accountable".

Being #ThrowbackThursday and all, eNCA takes you down memory lane and gives you the highlights (and lowlights) of former president Jacob Zuma's turbulent appearances in Parliament and elsewhere.

If there was one place the former president probably hated the most, it would be Parliament, where Zuma often got "burnt" by the opposition. Let it be the 6th parliament, not the 5th parliament. "We can not be the respecters of the constitution when it comes to Zuma, but when it comes to us, we want to pretend that we are clean", he said.

Malema said his party was not sympathetic to Zuma's appeals that he was being victimised, and warned South Africans not to fall for his "crocodile tears".

This was in light of damning findings by the Constitutional Court in December that Parliament had failed to hold Zuma to account after its ruling regarding non-security upgrades at his private Nkandla home. So we've been a parliament which has been busy over nothing accept the protection of Jacob Zuma. "It looks like we are all in agreement that the president must go...including the ANC", said Mthembu.

"In her letter today‚ Ms Mbete said she was now consulting on the request and would revert to Mr Malema".

A State of the Nation Address is set for the day.

If Zuma resigns before the scheduled sitting of the National Assembly at 2pm on Thursday, the ANC will move quickly to replace him with Ramaphosa through a vote in the House.
