OH congressional members critical of proposed cuts to Great Lakes Restoration Initiative

President Donald Trump again is trying reduce or eliminate federal funding for cleanups of some iconic US waterways.

Trump's proposal would cut funding for the GLRI from $300 million to $30 million. It dropped a bit this year, falling to $297,963,000.

The Trump administration made a similar attempt to strike down the waterway restoration efforts in its first budget a year ago, but Congress intervened.

Campaign director for the Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition Todd Ambs says, "The Trump plan is pure fantasy and will not help solve the nation's water infrastructure crisis". Debbie Stabenow, Michigan, co-chair Great Lakes Task Force (D): "I am pretty shocked after the major bipartisan effort that we had, and the push-back was so hard after they zeroed out the money past year". The program funds cleanup work, not research, said Gregory Boyer, a chemistry professor at SUNY College of Environmental Science and Forestry, in Syracuse. With that in mind, compare the size of the Finger Lakes and the Great Lakes and it's easy to see what an enormous resource the Great Lakes are and how many people are directly affected by them.

GLRI generally receives $300 million a year in funding. It works to combat threats to the Great Lakes, such as invasive species or loss of habitats. He said he plans to continue working to protect the Great Lakes and keep the GLRI fully funded. It's clear that when it comes to the Great Lakes our priorities are at odds with the administration. A selection of responses from lawmakers on both sides of the aisle below: Dave Joyce, Ohio (R): "Today feels like Groundhog Day as it relates to the Great Lakes funding".

The Trump Administration's infrastructure plan isn't exactly generous to the Great Lakes, either: the 1.5 trillion dollar proposal to help improve roads, bridges and water infrastructure doesn't appear to include any funds to help improve the Soo Locks so they can handle getting bigger ships across the lakes.

"We'll fight these harmful cuts that will take us backward on restoring the lakes", she said.
