Rep. Meadows: Immigration Bill Won't Come on Pelosi's Terms

United States politician Nancy Pelosi is thought to have set a new record for the longest speech ever made in the House of Representatives, after telling the stories of immigrants for eight hours, the BBC reports.

Pelosi wrapped up her speech around 6:10 p.m., about eight hours and five minutes after she started. There is no filibuster equivalent in the House of Representatives, so Pelosi took advantage of the so-called magic minute rule.

"Our DREAMers hang in limbo, with a cruel cloud of fear and uncertainty above them. We've laid out what we would like to see in immigration legislation, and I think it's something that Nancy Pelosi should support", Sanders said in the briefing. However, it does allow top leaders to speak as long as they please.

Many advocates believe the best chance for Dreamer protections is for Congress to pass what it can and then send it to the president, versus conforming to his demands that tank a deal.

"Without a commitment from Speaker Ryan comparable to the commitment from Leader McConnell, this package does not have my support", Pelosi said in a statement. His spokeswoman, AshLee Strong, reiterated that the speaker would only bring up immigration legislation that the president supports. Elizabeth Warren, Ryan wisely chose to let his colleague hold the floor.

He said he does think, though, that "100Democrats or more" will come across the floor and vote for a pending budget bill either Thursday night or early Friday.

Trump has said he will not entertain a DACA fix that doesn't include border security and funds for a $25 billion border wall.

Pelosi also told members of her caucus planning to vote "yes" on the budget deal not to telegraph those positions in order to maintain leverage, according to two Democratic sources. She's not asking for passage, just for commitment to - for a vote on an immigration bill and as far as we could tell, this is longest house speech in more than 170 years. Although Democrats initially claimed they wouldn't support any budget deal without a vote on DACA amnesty, they ultimately got on board with the expectation of a DACA and immigration reform vote in February.

In that context, Pelosi's marathon speech can be viewed as a signal to the progressive base that Democrats aren't quitting on DREAMers.

House Democrats changed plans for their scheduled retreat in Cambridge, Md. this week to stay in D.C. and be on hand for the debate.

Still, Pelosi shows no signs of stepping aside or giving up on efforts to secure a DACA deal.

The fate of Dreamers was thrown into jeopardy when the Trump administration ended the Deferred Action for Child Arrivals (Daca) programme.

"DACA has been made increasingly hard by the fact that Cryin' Chuck Schumer took such a beating over the shutdown that he is unable to act on immigration!"

Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., said his Freedom Caucus will fight it, but "I'm afraid the numbers will get so high and the debt ceiling will get added and it will be a Christmas tree of spending - that a lot of votes will be bought".
