Google reportedly working on video game streaming service called 'Yeti'

According to numerous sources, the company is now working on a new subscription-based service, compatible with Chromecast, which would be used to stream games.

Besides Android apps and the Play Store, Google's current gaming efforts are particularly centered around video livestreams on YouTube and Daydream VR. We don't know if Google is planning to strike exclusivity deals with these developers or if it will create a Google-branded console for streaming, though such an idea was floated by The Information's sources. The project is being led by two Google hardware executives-Mario Queiroz, VP of product management, and Majd Bakar, VP of engineering-so if this ever sees the light of day, new hardware seems likely. It's unclear how Google might solve those problems, but the company is reportedly considering a holiday 2017 launch.

Games-on-demand services are picking up a little more than expected, between the exploding success of the Xbox Game Pass, and Sony continuing to try to make a thing out of its cloud-based PlayStation Now service. Twitch is still the dominant esports live-streaming platform. The company has tested several versions of the tech so far and is said to be targeting "top tier" gaming developers. So this planned service is not to be confused with existing game subscription offerings like Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass that let users download unlimited games from a pre-selected pool of titles for a monthly fee. However, the firm told Reuters Harrison will report to Rick Osterloh, Google's senior vice president for hardware. It would be part of the Made by Google program, which now includes the Google Home smart speaker, Google Pixel 2 smartphone, and Chromecast.

The other interesting part of the report is that it claims Google is developing a console of its own. Microsoft launched Mixer a year ago. If Google is successful, it could grab a piece of the $109 billion videogame market.
